Treatment at the Chiropractic Center for Pain and Rehabilitation involves conservative, non-invasive treatments that do not involve surgical procedures or prescription medications. Our goal is to treat the underlying cause of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.
Some of the conditions treated here:
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Headaches
- Sciatica
- Bulging / Herniated Discs
- Muscle Spasms
- Joint Pain
- Whiplash
- Tendinitis
- Sprains / Strains
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Treatments may include spinal manipulation, flexion distraction therapy, decompression traction therapy, hot or cold packs, electrotherapy, ultrasound therapy, myofascial release techniques, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation exercises, and nutritional supplementation.
Spinal manipulation (adjustments)
The purpose of spinal manipulation is to restore movement to fixed spinal segments. Your spine is composed of many individual vertebrae stacked on top of each other. There are moveable joints between all of these vertebrae, however, sometimes certain segments of the spine will become fixed (meaning the joints are not moving). Trauma/accidents, stress, muscle spasms, poor posture, and weak muscles are some of the possible causes of spinal fixations. These spinal fixations can lead to pain and more muscle spasm in and around the area. In order to restore movement to these spinal segments, your chiropractor will use his/her hands, an instrument, or a specialized table to move the fixed segments. By restoring movement to the fixed spinal segments, this treatment can relieve pain and reduce muscle spasms in the area of complaint.
Decompression Traction Therapy
Conditions such as herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and general low back pain can be treated with this type of therapy. Many times decompression traction therapy is used when many other avenues of treatment have failed. Decompression traction is designed to create a negative pressure within the disc to promote re-hydration and self-healing of the disc tissue. This effect can thereby relieve pain that is caused by nerve root compression, or pain that is caused by injured or unhealthy discs.
Flexion Distraction Therapy
The same conditions that are treated with decompression traction therapy can sometimes be treated with flexion distraction therapy. Flexion distraction both flexes and tractions the spine in order to promote disc healing, relieve pressure from affected nerve roots, and stretch lumbar muscles. Many times flexion distraction therapy is tried as a first line of therapy. It is a very successful procedure, however, when it is not successful, the doctor may consider the decompression traction therapy program for the patient.
Electrotherapy
This type of therapy aids in the relief of pain and promotes soft tissue healing. It reduces symptoms, decreases localized swelling, increases blood circulation, reduces muscle atrophy, and also stimulates the release of the body’s natural pain killers called endorphins.
Ultrasound
This therapy can be effective in reducing edema (swelling), relaxing muscle spasms, speeding the healing process, reducing pain, and even reduce nerve root irritation.
Myofascial Release
This is a manual, hands-on therapy performed on the patient’s muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Specialized stretching and kneading techniques are applied to the muscles in order to relax muscle tissue, promote circulation, increase range of motion and flexibility, prevent fibrosis and adhesions within soft tissues, enhance muscle function, and break up scar tissue within muscle fibers.
Rehabilitation Exercises
These types of exercises are directed at the restoration of function and mobility. By doing these specialized, simple exercises, we can restore muscle tone and increase the strength of the injured area. Rehabilitation exercises are very important in order to reduce the risk of a re-injuring the same area in the future.
